Parthenope (2024)

Parthenope is a 2024 coming-of-age drama film written, produced, and directed by Paolo Sorrentino. An international co-production between Italy and France, the film stars Celeste Dalla Porta, Stefania Sandrelli, Gary Oldman, Silvio Orlando, Luisa Ranieri, Peppe Lanzetta, and Isabella Ferrari. Parthenope had its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or. The film was released theatrically in Italy on 24 October 2024, although it has received mixed reviews from critics.

Set in the sunlit city of Naples, the film follows Parthenope, a woman who reflects on her childhood, during which her brothers were obsessed with her. She’s praised by her anthropology professor as a brilliant student, yet she’s unsure about her future. While considering a career in acting, she’s uninspired by her eccentric acting coach. She also entertains the idea of becoming an aesthete, leading her to meet the drunken writer John Cheever, whose work she admires. Her journey also includes pondering a romantic affair with an unattractive bishop who attends the yearly miracle of dried blood that turns liquid—a phenomenon Parthenope studies in anthropology.

The film stars Celeste Dalla Porta as Parthenope, with Stefania Sandrelli portraying her older self. Gary Oldman takes on the role of John Cheever, while Silvio Orlando plays Devoto Marotta. Other notable cast members include Luisa Ranieri as Greta Cool, Peppe Lanzetta as the Bishop, Isabella Ferrari as Flora Malva, and Lorenzo Gleijeses, among others.

Sorrentino described the film as being about a woman named Parthenope who bears the name of her city but is neither a siren nor a myth, contrary to the figure of the same name in Greek mythology. The film was co-produced by Lorenzo Mieli for Fremantle's The Apartment Pictures, Ardavan Safaee for Pathé, and Sorrentino's Numero 10. Principal photography took place in Naples and the nearby island of Capri, with cinematographer Daria D'Antonio, who previously worked on The Hand of God, capturing the visuals.

Parthenope premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2024, where it received a nine-and-a-half-minute standing ovation. Prior to its Cannes screening, A24 acquired the North American distribution rights. The film was released in Italy by PiperFilm on 24 October 2024 and will be released in France by Pathé on 12 March 2025. It is also set for a U.S. release by A24 on 7 February 2025.

In terms of reception, Parthenope has received mixed reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, 46% of 35 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.5/10. On Metacritic, the film holds a score of 57 out of 100, indicating "mixed or average" reviews. Critics have been divided, with some praising the film’s technical craftsmanship but criticizing its narrative. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw described the film as "facile" and "conceited," while Cineuropa’s Davide Abbatescianni labeled it Sorrentino's "less accomplished" work, noting that Dalla Porta's character was difficult to understand.
