"Dog Man" – An Upcoming Animated Superhero Comedy Film

Dog Man is an exciting new American animated superhero comedy based on Dav Pilkey's popular children's graphic novel series. It serves as a spin-off and story within a story from Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017) and is the second installment in the Captain Underpants franchise. Written and directed by Peter Hastings, the film is produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. The star-studded voice cast includes Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Poppy Liu, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd, and Ricky Gervais, with Hastings lending his vocal effects for the titular character, Dog Man.

Production and Development

In December 2020, DreamWorks Animation announced that they were developing a film based on the Dog Man graphic novels, with Peter Hastings set to direct. Hastings had previously worked with Dav Pilkey's creations on The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants (2018–20). In January 2024, Karen Foster joined the team as producer, and by September of the same year, the cast was officially revealed.

Premise

The story follows Knight, a human police officer, and his dog Greg, who both suffer injuries on the job. A life-saving medical procedure fuses them together, resulting in the creation of Dog Man. As the hybrid hero, Dog Man is tasked with protecting his community and taking down his archenemy, Petey the Cat. However, when Li'l Petey, Petey's kind-hearted kitten clone, unexpectedly appears, the dynamic between the characters begins to shift.

• Peter Hastings provides vocal effects for Dog Man, a hybrid character created from a police officer and his dog.
• Pete Davidson voices Petey, the arrogant, evil orange cat who is Dog Man’s main adversary.

Additionally, several other voice actors, including Laraine Newman, Melissa Villaseñor, and Cheri Oteri, have been cast in undisclosed roles.

Animation and Music

The animation for Dog Man is being handled by Jellyfish Pictures, known for their work on How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming and Spirit Untamed. The film’s score will be composed by Tom Howe, adding an exciting layer to the animation’s energetic feel.

Release and Marketing

Dog Man is set to premiere at the 2025 Festival de l'Alpe d'Huez in Alpe d'Huez, France, on January 15, 2025, before its U.S. theatrical release on January 31, 2025. The film will also be available in IMAX. In addition, a partnership with Jakks Pacific and Disguise will bring merchandise based on both the film and the Dog Man book series. A special art book for the film was released on December 10, 2024, by Abrams Books.
